THE POYA REGION

This region which is situated in the centre of New Caledonia on the west coast, between the mountain range and the coast, has vast areas favourable for pastoral farming and mountains which possess an enormous mineral resource:
Nickel and also manganese and copper which countain a little gold.

The rivers of Noba in the south and Nepoui in the north as well as the central mountain range are the boundaries between the communes of Poya, Ponerihouen and Houailou.

Poya is the only commune in New Caledonia that is shared by both the south and north provinces.
The area of the commune is 90 000 Km ² (84 580 Hectares) and it has a variety of different types of relief.

A vast coastal plain,
A large hilly area,
A narrow coastline of Porwy bay,
Mining massifs:

The Boulinda massif in the north,
And a massif composed of a succession of summits (Mount Djuma, Mount Méareu, Mount Mé Maoya, “ la dent de Poya”, Adio and Méou peaks) in the south.
